The Fall 2016 semester was a great success for the students participating in FIU’s Excellence in Global Learning Medallion program. Nine graduates earned the Medallion during a ceremony held in December, prior to commencement week.
The graduates, as a group, accomplished the following during their undergraduate years at FIU:
- Studied abroad in Spain, China, and France
- Interned at an international accounting firm researching global markets, a refugee resettlement agency, the British Consulate General in Miami, FIU’s Office of Women, Equity, & Diversity, and a youth school in Guatemala
- Served as leaders of clubs including GlobeMed, Toastmasters International, and the French National Honor Society
- Volunteered at a local Belize Festival, the Women Who Lead Conference, Habitat for Humanity, and a local anti-human trafficking meeting
Fall 2016 also marked the first semester in which fully online students, those who complete their entire degree remotely, including from other states and countries, were able to participate in the Medallion. To compensate for the fact that fully online students do not visit FIU’s physical campuses, a variety of live-streamed, recorded,
and local activity opportunities are facilitated through a special Blackboard course environment specifically for our fully online student population. In the first semester of our fully online program, 16 students participated, including students residing in Italy and the Dominican Republic!

Since the program’s inception in Fall 2014, 52 students have completed the program and over 1,000 have actively participated by attending campus events, applying for internships, studying abroad, volunteering, and more.
