Teachers gain digital tools for globalizing the classroom

During the first week of August 2016, Miami-Dade public school teachers participated in a workshop designed to provide them with the skills and digital tools necessary to effectively integrate content about Latin America & the Caribbean into their classrooms.

One highlight of the workshop was a walking tour of Little Haiti, which emphasized its historical roots, cultural vibrancy, and issues of gentrification.

The workshop, “Global Issues and Digital Media: Integrating Latin American and Caribbean Themes into the Curriculum,” was co-hosted by FIU’s Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center and the Office of Global Learning Initiatives, as well as by Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The hands-on, day-long sessions at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus focused on understanding the interrelatedness of global issues and teaching strategies that center on media and digital literacy, in addition to regionally
